Happy New Year!

 

How did you end 2023?  When you look back over the past 12 months, is it just a blur or did you achieve or accomplish something you always wanted to do?

 

Did you set a resolution (or two) last year?   Did you achieve it?  Do you even remember what it was?  

 

We all know that January is the month when we all start strong on changes we want to make for the year.  After all, that is what everyone is talking about - it’s our conversation starter!  

 

But, let's face it.  It is SO EASY to stay in our comfort zone.  

 

You know the one.   Your routine.  When you get up, what you do after you get up, etc.  

 

When we want to change something about our routine or ourselves.  It can be difficult because, well, we love routine.  And you have created one that is comfortable for you right now.  

 

I know at the end of the day, if I sit down in the big comfy recliner in my house, the likelihood of me doing ANYTHING productive the rest of the night drops to - well, zip really.  That chair is comfy, plus my dogs join me and well, they are comfortable so I don’t want to move them either.  

 

If we want to live life to the fullest, we have to be willing to get out of our comfort zone.  Sometimes the universe sends us reminders of this with surprise changes in our lives.  

 

Many of you already know that my family had a surprise change a few weeks ago.   My father died, unexpectedly.   Yes, he was older but was not seriously ill.  It seems it was just his time to leave.

 

Surprise change.  A reminder that change is constant.  And if I want to achieve anything different, I have to get out of my comfort zone to do it.  

 

Only time will tell if my father's death will change our family’s connections that come when we lose someone.  

 

But that is what life is about - a change can give us a gentle push or sometimes a big shove to move us out of our routine and get serious about changes.  

 

Changes can give us the spark - the motivation to want to make a change.

 

Most of us fail to realize the greatest rewards we receive and earn in life come from taking a risk and making a change. Getting out of our comfort zone and trying something different or new.

 

Think about the last time you tried something new - outside of your comfort zone.

 

Our hearts race - we get nervous. We wonder can I do this?

 

We dig deep and hold onto the initial motivation that inspired us to start on the path.  

 

In January, almost everyone thinks about trying to get “in shape,” lose weight, or feel better.

 

All of these can be accomplished with a fitness routine that supports us and helps us be the best version of ourselves we can be.

 

But, starting a new fitness program to improve your health is outside our comfort zone.  It’s the start that stops most people.    

 

We think “I will look silly, I don’t know what to do, and everyone will know I am doing it wrong.”  One of my favorites: “ I have to get in shape before I start a fitness class/program.”  

 

We all start here. Not knowing, unsure of how to reach our goals, just knowing we want to do something to improve.

 

Don’t give up before you start - Thomas Edison said this after inventing the light bulb: “I found 10,000 ways it didn’t work before I found the one that did work.”
