“If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.”

-Thomas Jefferson

Happy 4th of July!

At my house, we celebrate the 4th by sleeping a little later, taking time to actually cook breakfast, heading up to the pool to cool off, and (of course) having a cookout.  Complete with corn on the cob, burgers (turkey for me), brats, chips, and an ice cream cake.

What does the 4th mean to you?

How free do you feel?  Do you experience doubts or worries that imprison you in a cycle of avoidance or fear?  Perhaps afraid of the very thing that would allow you to feel truly happy and joyful?

As a kid, we use to take family vacations - my family, my aunts and uncles, and their families, everyone went.  It was a blast - at least for us kids.

One trip was on a “rafting trip.”  Think Inner-tubing here - no white waters for us!  Onto the bus, we all went with our big floating tubes and the company took us several miles up the river so we could float down to the exit point by the company store and parking lot.

The driver explained the river was a slower current, so it would be a nice float down the 3 miles to the landing IF we went to the middle of the river - where it looked like there was a little bit faster current.

About half of us jumped in and out to the middle we went!   Splashing & goofing off.  The worriers of the trip stayed closer to the banks - which slowed them WAY DOWN.

They kept getting stuck in the shallower water or even on some of the branches of trees lining the river.

Same trip, two very different experiences.  Those of us in the middle had a blast - floating, splashing, and having a good time - the ones close to shore ended up with a very different experience - the float trip ended up being work for them  - having to push off from the bottom, getting scratches and generally not enjoying themselves.

The choice we made to go to the middle and be free of the banks, allowed us to have a fun and happy experience.  Trying something different than we had done before had paid off for us.

Looking back, that trip really brings to life a quote above from Thomas Jefferson.   Joy and happiness are ours if we simply choose to try something different.

So today, take your freedom and try something different!  Wave at a neighbor you don’t know, smile at the cashier at the store, or help someone new.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
