Letting Go to Move Forward

When one door closes another door opens, but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.” -Alexander Graham Bell

September is the month when nature begins letting go of summer.

The sun starts setting earlier, trees start dropping leaves, birds start moving south and our gardens give up the last of their bounty.

It's a time of change.

Many of us want to hold on to summer - cold weather and winter are not our “cup of tea.”

We are attached to summer.

An attachment is holding on to something that no longer is helpful. If the birds held onto their nests in winter, they could die.

We all experience attachment, it’s part of being human.

We all have that piece of clothing or pair of shoes in the closet we haven’t worn in years, but just can’t quite let go of it. This is an attachment.

Often holding onto something often means we don’t see the new opportunities open to us.

We have to let go to move forward in our lives.

When we retire, we have to let go of our job or career and start again. go and create a new version of ourselves.

Our health is no different.

We have to let go of who we are right now to start.

You may be thinking, “but, I have a medical issue, I can’t exercise.”

You can.

Everyone has a health issue.

For those of you who don’t know me well, I have several medical issues that could have stopped me from being a “fitness person.”

I have torn the meniscus in one of my knees three times over the years. I have a “bad hip” (yes, the docs keep saying replacement is in my future), and I have experienced three (yes, that’s 3) strokes.

When I say you can exercise, get better, and live a longer, healthier more energetic life. I know from experience this is true.

The hardest part of the journey is letting go of whom we are right now and deciding to open a new door.

Right now, nature is prepping itself - and us if we let it - for the next season. Embrace the change, and decide to open a new door.
